Darling, Solon #2 (23 FEB 1845 - 26 FEB 1909)

Saturday morning while temporarily deranged, Solon Darling shot himself in the head.  Death was instantaneous.  Mr. Darling had been in ill health for some time and the continual pain  he suffered cause his mental derangement.  At the time of his death he was making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Ure at Lynn (Clark Co., Wis.).  The news of his death was a great shock to hi many friends here, for Mr. Darling was a fine man and was held in high esteem.  He was in this city last week taking his medical treatment and circulating among his friends, and while he seemed to brood a little over his physical condition, yet he was in good spirits and seeming good health.

Mr. Darling was born in New York on Feb. 23, 1845, when he was a young man he came west to pursue his vocation of farming.  In 1861 he enlisted at West Bend to Co. D. 5th Reg. and served until he mustered out in 1865.  The same year he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Ruscow at West Bend and to them two children were born, Mel Darling of Spring Valley and Mrs. Geo. Ure of Lynn.  On Oct. 1, 1904, Mrs. Darling died and Mr. Darling came to Lynn to reside with his daughter.

Mr. Darling was an honorable conscientious and kind-hearted man.  He was well educated and was a close follower of the topics of the day.  His honesty and reliability were recognized by his friends and he was accorded high esteem among them.

The remains were taken to Spring Valley Monday, Mel having come in response to the announcement of his father’s death and the funeral was held there Tuesday morning.
