Hutchings, Sam & Margarette (50th - 8 MAY 1909)
Fifty years ago, Mr. Sam Hutchings, in the prime of vigoruous and energetic young manhood, took to the altar Miss Margarette McKeand. They were married on May 8, 1859, by Rev. J. M. Walter, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the time of their marriage Mr. Hutchings was 20 years of age, having been born in 1839 at Peekskill, N.Y., and Mrs. Hutchings was 17 years old, having been born at Wauwatosa, Wis., in 1842. Ten years after their marriage, in the year 1869, they came to Clark County and settled in the town of Pine Valley, four miles south of Neillsville, and there they have lived ever since, laboring that they might amass a competence for the old days that cannot be held off. To illustrate the stability and perseverance of Mr. and Mrs. Hutchings, it may be noted that they have lived on their present farm for 40 years, and that during that time every farm between theirs’ and Neillsville has changed ownership once and in many cases more often. So that this couple is one of the oldest landmarks in Clark County, and Hutchings Corners is as well known as Neillsville. Three children have added their joy to them, Mrs. J. W. McAdams, Miss Mamie Hutchings and John E. Hutchings of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In all public affairs of the town and county, Mr. Hutchings has always been prominent. He has held various town offices, and to his keen business acumen and foresight may in a measure be attributed some of the success of the Lynn Mutual Insurance Co., of which he has been a director for 15 years. His wife has been a fitting companion and helpmate in his career, and the long years of peaceful and contented married life has left its imprint upon her and molded her character into one of charity, kindness and goodness. Geniality and goodness of heart mark this couple in the most distinguished manner, and the mention of Mr. and Mrs. Hutchings cannot but kindle the eye and refresh the memory with thoughts of the kind deeds they have performed and the enviable life they have lived.
As a fitting memorial of their long years together, last Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Hutchings celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and the entire neighborhood and town joined with them in celebrating the occasion in a befitting manner. The bride wore a golden wreath and in the button-hole of the groom was worn a golden bouquet. The Hutchings home was decorated in a fitting manner, with a profusion of flowers. Under tents upon the lawn and in the house a bounteous dinner was served, and a large number of their intimate friends joined with them in celebrating this, the most joyous and happy event of their live. They received many appropriate gifts from their friends. May Mr. and Mrs. Hutchings defy Time for many years more and round out their lives in the peace and happiness that their long years of patient industry has so effectually earned.
