Hewett, Emeline #2 (19 MAR 1829 - 15 MAY 1909)

Mrs. Emeline Hewett, relict of James Hewett, died at the home in this city (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.), Saturday morning, May 15, 1909, death resulting from general debility following a paralytic stroke suffered some three months ago, while visiting a sister in Illinois.  The funeral took place at the house Tuesday at 2:30, Rev. W. T. Hendren of Greenwood, her old pastor, officiating.

Decedent was born Emeline Hill at Minerva, Essex Co., N.Y., March 19, 1829, making her age well past eighty years.  Her parents were Ira W. and Mary Hill.  She moved to Michigan in 1847, where she married Thomas J. Niles, who died there some years later.  In 1874 she married James Hewett and came to Neillsville, an incident of the homecoming being the finding g in ashes of the fine home which Mr. Hewett had just completed on the site of the present spacious home, and to which he was proudly bring his bride.  But with characteristic spirit this pioneer pair went about the task of building a still finer house, at that time and for many years thereafter being the finest residence in Clark County.

Under the hospitable management of Mrs. Hewett, who was a generous hearted, noble woman, and an old colonial dame in spirit and appearance if there ever was seen one in these modern times, their home was the social center of the town, always open to high and low alike, and she was ever most pleased when doing most for others.

She leaves a son, Ira A. Niles of Spring Valley, Wis., and stepson, S. F. Hewett, and two sisters, mrs. Wells White of Tonlon, Ill., and Mrs. Almeda Eddy of Grand Ledge, Mich., both too old and feeble to come to the funeral.

For some years past the beloved old lady has been unable to be about much, especially since the death of her husband a few years ago, but in her better days she was a woman of great strength of character and managed her extensive establishment with a master hand, having always been an able ally in all her husband’s undertaking.
