Jackson, Walter (12 Dec. 1876 - 25 July 1953)
Walter Jackson, who suffered a heart attack after
attending a family picnic at Neenah on Sunday, July 19, died at
Theda Clark hospital, Neenah, about 4:00 o’clock Saturday.
Funeral services were held at the Westgor Funeral Home at Neenah,
Tuesday afternoon at 1:30. The Masonic funeral ritual was given by
Walter Cattanach, of Owen. Internment was made in Oakhill cemetery
beside the grave of Mrs. Jackson.
Acting as pallbearers were Kenneth Anderson, W.
O. Colby, Lowell Dorn, Vern Hemphill, Wilbur Kuehnast, of the
Abbotsford Masonic lodge, and Tom Olson of the Medford lodge, of
which Mr. Jackson was a member since 1901.
Other members attending acted as honorary
pallbearers. They were F. B. Wing, C. W. Hoffman, R. H. Treat,
Walter Lueth, Orville Laabs, Stanley Thomson, John Pittsley, Walter
Danielson, Al Holtzhausen, and Al Notbohm, of Chelsea, of the
Abbotsford lodge; Franklin Kraut, of Owen, and a group from
Medford: Herman Leicht, Joe Loeb, Ernest Schief, Raymond
Fredrickson, Dr. Glen Schief, O. N. Markus, William Thomas, Ervin
Pries, and George Stephenson.
Among friends of Mr. Jackson who attended the
services were H. J. Amacher, Vern Dohm, Herbert Juneau, Ben Laabs,
Jack Nikolay, Glen Resech, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kuenzi, Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Ortmeier, and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Melvin and son, Neal, of
Abbotsford; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Cornelius and Frank Terrio, of
Marshfield; Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Thieme and daughter, Sandra
Mueller, of Jefferson; Dr. G. G. Shields and Bill Kozlowski,
Wisconsin Rapids..
Walter Jackson was born Dec. 12, 1876, in Neenah.
He received his education there and learned the cigar making
business during a three-year apprenticeship. In the latter part of
1896, he went to Medford and worked at that trade for Dumke,
Manufacturer of Cigars.
On Aug. 27, 1898, he was married to Miss Mary
Boettcher. She preceded him in death in April, 1948.
In 1906, Mr. Jackson started a cigar factory of
his own at Tomahawk and in 1907, came to Abbotsford where he had
the Abbotsford Cigar Factory and was actively engaged in making
cigars up to the time of his sudden, fatal illness.
Mr. Jackson filled various public offices. He was
the village treasurer in 1918 and in 1935 finished the unexpired
term of trustee after the death of A. J. Meyers. He was elected
assessor in 1935 and held that office continuously since, and was
reelected at the April election, this year.
He was director of the board of education from
1925 to 1927 and was treasurer for 12 years. When his term expired
in July, Mr. Jackson was not a candidate for reelection.
For many years, Mr. Jackson was the advertising
solicitor for the Shopping Guide, published by the Chamber of
Commerce.
Surviving him are his two sons, Miles, at Appleton; Otto, at home; and two daughters, Mrs. Maurice (Katherine) Olson, and Mrs. Harold (Frances) Casperson, both of Neenah. There are five grand children.
