Zschernitz, Louis Allen Charles (21 October 1920 - 3 August 2009) With Flag

 
 

Louis Allen Charles Zschernitz, 88, died Aug. 3, 2009, at the Neillsville Health & Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family.

 
 

Louis was born Oct. 21, 1920 to Carl and Matilda Zschernitz. He was a lifelong resident of Neillsville and attended St. John’s Lutheran Grade School.  He was united in marriage May 28, 1941, to Genevieve C. Irish.

 
 

Louis joined the National Guard in November 1937 and was assigned to the infamous Red Arrow 32nd Division, 128th Infantry, Service Company in Neillsville.  His unit was called to active duty Oct. 15, 1940.  He was deployed and fought in the New Guinea, Papuan and Leyte Philippines campaigns.  Among other decorations, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.  He was honorably discharged in May of 1945.

 
 

After his discharge, he worked at the Clark County Highway Department and Neillsville Transport until his retirement.  Louie loved to spend time with his family.  He enjoyed working as a mechanic and helping his neighbors and friends.

 
 

He is survived by his children, Larry (Joyce) Zschernitz, Schofield, Tom (Carolyn) Zschernitz, Neillsville, Gary (Margie) Zschernitz, Neillsville, Jayne (John) Perrine, Neillsville, Alan (Karen) Zschernitz, Marshfield, Terry Zschernitz, Neillsville, Joel (Darlene) Zschernitz, Neillsville, and Melodie (Gary) Foster, Oklahoma City, OK/Washington, DC; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Laverne (Ann) Zschernitz, Stanley, and Melvin (Rose) Zschernitz, Marshfield.

 
 

Louie was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Genevieve C. Irish; one son, Ronne Zschernitz; grandchildren, Scott and Joshua Zschernitz; great-grandchild, Brookelyn Roenz; and parents, Carl and Matilda Zschernitz.

 
 

Services will be held Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Neillsville, with 9 a.m. rosary, visitation following and funeral at 10:30 a.m.
