Salo, Mary #2 (15 FEB 1879 - 11 MAR 1953)
A resident of this community for the past 42 years was placed in her final resting place at Riverside Cemetery when funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Mary Salo Friday afternoon, March 13. She had passed away at her home on March 11th, 1953 after being ill for several months. She was 74 years of age. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. from the Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Henry Aukee officiating.
Messrs. Dan Arola, Matt Hautamaki, Art Finnila, Victor Matilla, Kayo Maki and Wm. Hautamaki served as pallbearers. In charge of the floral offerings were Mrs. Henry Laube, Mrs. Harvey Schwarze, Evelyn Twait, Mrs. Dan Arola and Mrs. Art Finnila. During the services the church choir sang "Near the Cross: in English and "Under His Wings" in Finnish.
The deceased was born on Feb. 15, 1879 in Lajpajarvi, Finland. Twenty-one years later she came to America in 1900, establishing her home at Bessemer, Mich., where she was united in marriage to Matt Salo on June 15th of the same year. Eleven years later they moved to Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), settling on a farm south of the city where she resided until the time of her death.
During these many long and tiring years she worked diligently in the development of their farm and raising a family of six children. She also won the love and admiration of her neighbors and created many friends through her active participation in community and church affairs.
She is survived by two sons, William and Edwin, two daughters, Lillian and Mrs. Jennie Porath, Owen; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death.
Those from out of town attending the services were Mrs. Sophia Arola, Mrs. Ted Rouse, Mrs. Mary Blomberg, Mrs. Reino Hauta, and Mrs. John Newman of Bessemer, Mich; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Salo, Mrs. Eric Salo, Mrs. Isaac Harin, Lilia and Eli Salo of Iron River, Mich.; Mrs. Victor Hakola of Floodwood, Minn.; Mrs. Mary Wisti and Mr. and Mrs. Jaijala of Barron.
