Alfred James Murray was born in Racine on January 16, 1896. He was six when his parents moved to a farm near Ogema, where he attended the public schools. After leaving school he entered the employ of the Soo Line as a section laborer at Ogema. A year and one-half later he accepted a similar job with the North Western Line at Buffalo, Wisconsin. Seventeen days after taking this job he was promoted to the foremanship of a section crew. Except for one year when he was with the same road as a brakeman, he held this position five and one-half years. Next he was with the Omaha Line at Hudson, Minneapolis and Altoona for one year as section foreman. In June 1918 he enrolled in the Machine-Gun Corps of the United States Army. He served in the World War for nine months, and was stationed at Camp Hancock, Augusta, Georgia. Several months of his army career was spent as a sergeant instructor in a machine-gun school at this camp, training recruits in the art of firing machine-guns. After the war he spent one season at farmwork at Ogema. On March 10, 1920, he entered the employ of the Soo Line as section foreman. His place of duty was Dorchester, where he remained until he was transferred to this city in September, 1926. 
 

Mr. Murray was married to Miss Mary Fitzmaurice of Dorchester, in the Catholic church in that city, October 4, 1921. They are the parents of two sons: Alfred James Jr. 5 and Emmet Ambrose 4.  
 

Mr. Murray is a member of the Brotherhood of American Railway Employees. Politically, he is Independent. His hobbies are fishing and hunting.
