Charles Carl Kuehmichel, 112 West Grant
Street, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kuehmichel, was born in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin, February 3, 1886, and came to this city with his parents
when he was a year and one-half, their arrival here occurring only
a few months after the big fire of this city. His home has been
here since. He received his education in the Immanuel Lutheran
Church. A few weeks after his confirmation, which occurred in
Immanuel Lutheran Church at the age of 14, he accepted employment
in the Upham Factory and remained with this institution for 27
years, up to the time about two years ago, when it discontinued
operations. Since then, he has been employed in the culvert
department of the Felker Company.
"When I started work, boys received only
$.40 and men $1.25 a day for common labor," he remarked
reminiscently. "Wages were paid in coupons because of a scarcity of
cash and there were no regular paydays until a law was passed
requiring employers to pay monthly. Later a law was made making
paydays semi-monthly." During the time of irregular paydays, men
would wait until they needed money, sometimes six and seven weeks,
and then ask for it, he explained.
His wife formerly was Miss Helen Bailing
of Neillsville. They were married by Reverend Brandt, in a Lutheran
church in Neillsville on May 6, 1909. They are the parents of
eleven children: August 19, William 18, Carl 17, Norma 15, Edward
14, Harold 12, Dorothy 10, Lorraine 8, Elmer 7, Arthur 5 and Esther
3. Mrs. Kuehmichel’s father is Fred Bailing of Minnesota,
formerly of Neillsville.
Fraternally, Mr. Kuehmichel is affiliated with the Workmen’s Aid Society, a sick and accident benefit society said to have been organized by the late ex-governor W. H. Upham in the early years of the Upham Industry. Politically, he is Independent. His hobbies are fishing, reading and cards.
