John Frederick Albert Wenzel was born
near Althuette, Brandenberg, Germany, October 12, 1862. Most
everyone knows him as Albert Wenzel. After finishing his
educational training he spent three years as an apprentice in his
father’s butcher shop. Then he worked a number of years at
his trade at different points in Germany, most of the time in
Berlin. At the age of 25 years he entered the butcher business on
his own account. In 1900 he came to this country and associated
himself with his nephew, William Wenzel, to engage in the same
business in Colby. A year and a half later they disposed of their
business and purchased a butcher shop in Marshfield, situated on
the site now occupied by the First National Bank. Later they moved
to the location of the present Wenzel Market. Ten years ago William
Wenzel retired from the firm and Albert admitted his sons, Carl and
Rudolph, into the partnership.
Mr. Wenzel was married to Amelia Glaser
of Althuette at her home, October 13, 1887. Six of their eight
children are living: Carl, Rudolph; Mrs. Theodore Wendt, Elizabeth
and Albert Jr., all of Marshfield; and Mrs. Van H. Kahl of Winona,
Minnesota.
He is a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Politically, he is Independent. His hobby is walking.
