Herman L. Sommers was born in Two Rivers,
December 29, 1892. The following year he came to Marshfield with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sommers, who purchased a farm just
across the north city limits on the McMillan Road. It is now owned
and operated by the son, and has been his home continuously since
arriving here.
After completing the course of study in
the McMillan rural school, he applied himself to farming, and is
now classed as one of the progressive dairymen who have contributed
to the agricultural standing of this section. When the McMillan
Community Club was organized ten years ago he was elected a
director and has served in that capacity since, as well as vice
president for a time prior to 1927, when he was chosen president.
He is also a member of the American Society of Equity, and has
served as a member of the school board in his district. In 1902 he
enlisted in Company A of the local militia, where he served in each
of the various offices, from corporal to captain, obtaining his
commission as captain in 1913, and an honorable discharge in
1916.
He was married June 4, 1913, at Colby to
Miss Inabelle Straub of that community. She died November 30, 1926,
leaving him with four children: Verna, Kermit, Edna and Loraine.
The latter passed away February 4 of this year.
Fraternally, he is affiliated with the Order of Owls. Politically, he is a Republican. His hobby is reading.
