Charles James Mettelka was born in Austria, February, 27, 1883, and came to this country with his parents at the age of one and one-half years. After living at Dorchester a year and one-half, the family located in this city. His home has been here since. After finishing his course of study in St. John’s Parochial School, he worked in his father’s tinshop, and learned the trade of a tinner. Leaving the employ of his father four years later, he worked in the Kliner, Lang and Sharmann Tinshop four years. Then he accepted the offer to manage the C. S. Sheerin Hardware Company Tinshop, which position he held eight years. Then he established a shop of his own, and conducted it seven years. Selling out to his brother Joseph, he worked eight months for the government at his trade in the shipyards at Manitowoc. Returning home in 1920, he took a job in the William J. Lang Sheet Metal Shop, on North Chestnut Street, which has been his place of employment up to the present. 
 

Mr. Mettelka was married to Miss Gretta Eggert, of Edgar, by the Reverend F. X. Orthen, in the Catholic church at Edgar, August 9, 1916. Mr. and Mrs. Mettelka are the parents of two daughters, Dorothy 10 and June 3. 
 

Charles is the man who plays the bass horn in the 135th Medical Regiment Band of this city. For a number of years he was identified with the famous Second Regiment Band; for a time holding the rank of corporal. Altogether, his band career covers 20 years. 
 

Fraternally, he is affiliated with the local court of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Politically, he is a Republican. His hobbies are fishing and hunting.
