Ferdinand Carl Riedel, who is 73 years
old today, was born in Germany and came to America with his parents
in 1872, at the age of 13 years. They lived for a time at Green Bay
and later in the woods near Oconto where they remained for
approximately six months, after which they moved to Rantoul,
Calumet County. Two years later they came to Clark County, and
purchased a 60-acre tract of land four miles west of the Wood
County line, where they spent their remaining days. Forty-one years
ago Mr. Riedel purchased 40 acres of stump land and woods in the
town of Rock, and built the house which has since been his home. He
cleared the land, brought it under cultivation, and put up suitable
farm buildings. Six years ago he sold the farm but retained a life
lease on the family residence.
He was married November 19, 1883, at
Potter, Wisconsin, to Miss Catherine Martin of Rantoul, who was
born September 9, 1859. Of the nine children born to them, two,
Louis and Oscar are deceased. The others are: Fred, Mrs. Harlow
Sherman (Clara) and Ferdinand H., all of Marshfield; Mrs. Warren
Nason (Hattie), Nasonville; Mrs. Emil Lundstron (Elsie)
Minneapolis; Mrs. Earl Sherman (Emma) and Mrs. Arthur Mattson
(Susie), both of Wisconsin Rapids.
Fraternally, he is a member of the Lindsey Camp, Modern Woodmen of America. Politically, he is a Republican. His hobbies are fishing and motoring.
