Emil James Martens, a native of the town of Unity, was born March 10, 1896, on the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Martens, who still reside on the same place. After receiving an elementary education in the rural school, he learned the art of cheese making at the Maple Grove Factory and later took a course in the same line of work at the College of Agriculture, Madison. From 1909 to 1910 he was employed in a factory at Sugar Bush, from where he returned to Unity. He purchased a 160-acre tract of wild land, which he proceeded to clear, and on which he put up a few buildings at a time. Now it is one of the finest dairy farms for which central Wisconsin is noted. He has 70 acres under plow, has a fine herd of purebred and grade Holsteins, besides other farm stock, and is prominent in civic, church and community affairs. He was elected town clerk last April; is president of St. John’s Lutheran congregation of Riplinger, an office he has held since 1924, is secretary-manager of the Romeo Cooperative Dairy Association, a position he has had since 1925; and is secretary-treasurer of Unity Local, No. 133, Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of America. 
 

He was married November 2, 1911, in St. John’s, at Riplinger, to Miss Rosa Domer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Domer, also of Unity. Their children are: Miss Pauline, who graduated recently from Central State Teachers’ College, Stevens Point, and who will teach next fall at the Dill Creek School, town of Colby; John, who assists with the farm management; and Caroline, Bernice and Delores, also at home.  
 

Politically, he is a progressive Republican. His hobby is community work.
