Withee, Wisconsin

It seems that our town is on a boom. Two new business houses was built this summer and two more are being constructed. Still we would not like to see our town booming in one sense. It is much better for the town and its people, if we can advance slowly. The former condition is unnatural and unsound and when the boom is over, it is like a morning following a night of orgies. We do not expect to talk the town up to the best in the country, to induce the people to come here, and later be left with empty houses and a lot of dissatisfied speculators.

Our town must be Republican by a large majority, even the boys from the smallest up are in favor of the great party. They feel it an honor to walk in their fathers' footsteps and try to demonstrate their belief by wearing McKinley and Roosevelt caps. They utterly refuse to wear the silver one.

Our brick maker, P. K. Petersen, had a kiln of brick burned last Sunday night. The youth, about forty in all, took advantage of the opportunity and gathered at the place where they passed the time with different amusements.

Last Monday lightning struck a horse and a barn at Owen belonging to Mr. Hall, head book keeper of the Owen Milling Co., killing the horse instantly and burned the barn down. The barn was insured.

E. E. Nielsen, our watch watchmaker, made his regular trip to Greenwood Saturday to receive watches for repair.

P. H. Hansen had one of his plate window lights broken last week. We understand that it was insured.

A. C. Nielsen will commence building a business house in the northern part of town this week. When completed, his son F. Nielsen, and a young gentlemen of Chicago, will take charge of the building. What line of business they intend to handle is not known at this writing, but it will develop later.

The two young men, Messrs. O. and C. Andersen, who took the contract for the extension of the road north, are making marked progress. However, it is a considerable undertaking and it will take them till fall before finished.

Dr. C. S. Nielsen made a flying trip to Chicago last week. He was accompanied to Chicago by his brother, Dr. Theo. Nielsen, formerly a well known physician of this place, and his two daughters.

Jas. Moller who was struck on the chin by a hay fork some time ago, from which he suffered considerable pain, is now out of danger and is improving every day.

Miss Andersen, clerk at the Union Store, Waupaca, Wis., who came to Withee last Tuesday to visit friends and relatives, left for home Monday.

Mrs. M. Rasmussen, of Chicago, came to Withee last week to visit her sister, Mrs. Johnson.

Mrs. Hansen, of Chicago, is visiting her parents and other relatives here at present.

Carl Andreasen is busy digging a well on his place north of Hutle. In a few days he will commence building a residence on the same place.

The new Maccabee Hall at Owen was dedicated last Saturday evening. The Eau Claire orchestra were present entertaining the people. A great many visitors met and took part in the concert.

Dr. C. S. Nielsen is not at Withee much of the time, being called away to surrounding towns almost every day.
