Olson, Mr./Mrs. Fred (50th
Anniv. - 26 June 1954)
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Olson celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary on Saturday with open house in the
afternoon and evening at Cherokee hall. Dancing was enjoyed in the
evening.
Sharing in the festivities were their
seven children and their families: Mrs. Winnifred Matheson, Redondo
Beach, Cal.; Laurence Olson, Chippewa Falls; Mrs. Herman (Grace)
Feldbruegger, Wanakee; Byron Olson and Mrs. Norbert (Elva) Ven
Rooy, Colby; Mrs. Ben (Edith) Reil, Oshkosh; and Mrs. Herman
(Dorothy) Totzke, Stratford. A son, Elroy, died in infancy.
Relatives and friends from the following
localities were present: Madison, Chippewa Falls, La Crosse,
Dorchester, Wanakee, Oregon, Neillsville, Hilbert, Sheboygan,
Curtiss, Medford, Abbotsford, Unity, Spencer, Colby, Marshfield,
Wisconsin Rapids, Black River Falls, Orfordville, Stratford,
Ringle, Mosinee, Loyal, Edgar, Owen, and Kennan. Out of state
guests came from points in Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, California,
North Dakota, and Washington.
Mr. Olson was born on the family
homestead, near Curtiss, on Feb. 17, 1882. His wife, the former
Sarah Tuttle, was born in the town of Brighton on April 20, 1884.
They were married June 19, 1904, by the Rev. Hayden Nelson, pastor
of the Lutheran church at Stanley.
They have lived on their farm near
Cherokee since August 1914. Mr. Olson operated a saw mill at
Cherokee for 12 years and after that he operated a portable mill
around the area until 1944. He also operated a threshing machine in
this area for many years.
The pioneer has also been active in civic
circles, having served as clerk of the Cherokee school for 32 years
and as town chairman for two years. For the past 14 years he has
held a position on the county park commission and on the draft
board for nine years and the county school committee for seven
years.
Mrs. Olson has been active in various clubs and Red Cross work.
