Engel, Carl (Charles) F. (16 Apr. 1876 -
23 Mar. 1955)
Carl (Charles) F. Engel, age 78, died at
the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Leidholdt, at Baraboo, on
March 23, 1955. Mr. Engel was born on April 16, 1876, in Milwaukee
and came to Milan at the age of 18 years, making his home with an
uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Zeil.
On Nov. 27, 1901, he was united in
marriage to Mina Gerlack, of the town of Holton. They lived on
their farm near Milan for several years and then moved to Waukesha,
later returning to Abbotsford where they bought a home. Charlie, as
he was known, worked at the carpenter trade. In 1920 he became
janitor of the Abbotsford high school, which position he held for
28 years. He saw the old grade school built in 1904, also the
building of the present high school. Charlie enjoyed saying,
"I’ve seen kids graduate from high school whose parents I saw
start and finish grade school and continue on through high school."
In his 28 years as janitor, Charlie kept a record in the old grade
school where he rang the bell 22,892 times, a record of which he
was justly proud.
In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Engel sold their
home here and moved to Minneapolis. Later they moved to their home
on Lake Wissota, near Chippewa Falls, where they spent the past
five years. They went to Baraboo last fall for a visit at the home
of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Leinholdt.
Three days after their arrival, Mr. Engel suffered a stroke and his
condition remained serious until his death.
In November, 1951, they celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary at the Leidholdt home in Baraboo, where
many relatives gathered to spend this event in a joyous
manner.
Survivors include his wife and four
children, Leo, Milwaukee; Mrs. William (Marie) Leidholdt, Baraboo;
Mrs. Ray (Edna) Walther, Minneapolis; and Raymond, at home. A son,
Elmer, died in 1921. Also surviving are five grand children, two
sisters and one brother, of Milwaukee.
Funeral services were held Saturday
afternoon at the Presbyterian church here, with the Rev. Richard
Harrison officiating.
During the services, two hymns, "Take My
Hand, Precious Lord," and "Good Night Down Here, Good Morning Up
There," was sung by Mrs. Miles Galiger, with organ accompaniment by
E. C. Pascoe.
Masonic rites also were held at the
church.
Pallbearers, members of the Abbotsford
lodge, F. and A.M., of which Mr. Engel was a member for many years,
were Kenneth Ingersoll, Don Ingersoll, Kenneth Anderson, W. O.
Colby, Lowell Dorn, and Harry Treat. The flowers were carried by
ladies of the Eastern Star.
Those attending the funeral from out of town came from Milwaukee, Waukesha, Baraboo, Marshfield, Colby, Dorchester, Athens, Wausau, Manitowish, Minneapolis, and Chippewa Falls.
