Volland, William Earnest (26 April 1926 - 22 September 2009) With Flag

William E. Volland, 83, of Loyal died at the Memorial Medical Center Health & Rehab in Neillsville Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, after an eight-year courageous battle with multiple myeloma.

William Earnest Volland was born April 26, 1926, in Wauwatosa, the son of Jonas and Ida (Hoehn) Volland.  When he was a young boy, his family moved to a farm near Campbellsport, where Bill was raised and received his education.  After serving in the U. S. Navy for two years, Bill was united in marriage to Bernice Straub in Campbellsport.  They resided in the Campbellsport area until moving to a farm in the Neillsville/Globe area in 1953. Bernice passed away in 1978.  In 1984, Bill sold the farm and moved to Marshfield and married Mary Schmidt.  They later moved to Auburndale, and Mary passed away in 2001.  The last three years Bill has lived at the Hometown Village Apartments in Loyal.

He had many interests but especially loved spending time with his family, playing the accordion and concertina, fishing hunting, old tractors, dancing and reading Western novels.  Bill was a member of the Central Wisconsin Concertina Club for many years.

Bill will be dearly missed by two sons, William A. Volland and Thomas Volland both of Granton; four daughters, Judy (Chuck) Johnson and Sharon (Stan) Ratsch, both of Greenwood, Barbara (Leroy) Johnson of Granton and Diane Aumann-Nowak (John Nowak) of Spencer; two step-children, Joann (Don) Melander of Baldwin and Ron Schmidt of Delaware; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one niece, Phyllis, one nephew, Jim, and one cousin, Lisa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Bernice and Mary; one sister, Elsie Theil; and one son-in-law, Charles F. Aumann.

A Memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Cuddie Funeral Home in Loyal with visitation from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.  Rev. Daniel Zimmerman officiated, with burial to take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Neillsville at a later date.

Honorary pallbearers were: Charles Johnson, Leroy Johnson, Stanley Ratsch and John Nowak.  Military rites were conducted by the Loyal American Legion Post #175.
