Jakel, Bernard Charles (October 25, 1914 - August 31, 2009)

 
Bernard Charles Jakel, 94, Stanley died August 31, 2009 at Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Stanley, Wisconsin.

 
Bernard was born on October 25, 1914 in Clark Co., Town of Mayville near Curtiss to William and Ida (Wachsmuth) Jakel.  
 

He attended the Curtiss Grade School and the first two years of Curtiss High School that were available. He graduated in 1934, from Dorchester High School. That year he was a track star. He attended college at the University of Wisconsin Madison for one semester, followed by work in the Veterans Hospital at Waunakee until World War II when he joined the Army Air Force and was stationed in Gander Newfoundland Air Force Base and Bangor, Maine doing maintenance work. He went to officer’s training in Florida.  
 

He briefly married Doris Douglas of Bangor, Maine. They had no children.

 
After the war he was employed in St. Paul, Minn., and went to Globe Business College at night. After completing Business College he did bookkeeping at the Boyd Co-op, Ludington Creamery, Augusta Farmers Union and Fairchild Co-op. Purchasing 200 acres of woodland, he lived on Tower Road southeast of Boyd and did logging, raised cucumbers, and cooked maple syrup.  
 

His interests included sports, especially baseball; theater, he acted in school plays and later in the Edyth Bush Theater of St. Paul and Chippewa Falls Community Theater; traveling, he liked driving his car and liked the West, especially the Grand Canyon where he hiked down to Shadow Ranch and up the next day. He also enjoyed reading, visiting, church, record keeping and carpentry. He was a life long active member of Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. He is a current member at St. Peter’s Lutheran.

 
Bernard is lovingly survived by his sisters Lorraine French of Stanley, Marguerite Jakel of Abbotsford; and a brother William Jakel, Jr. of Portland, Oregon. He will be missed by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister Emmeline Jakel.

 
His funeral service will be on Thursday, September 3, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Boyd at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Ray Bell will preside. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery in

Curtiss at 1:30 p.m. with full Military Rites.
