Holverson, Alec
At last Alec Holverson may be said to be city broke, kind and gentle and guaranteed to eat out of the hand. Last week if he met an automobile, he would shy like a frightened colt. This week he owns one. Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither was Alec persuaded to buy a car in two or three of them. But where last week he didn’t know whether a person got into a car by climbing over the dash board or through the back of the canopy top, this week he talks about high and low speed, differentials and intentionals just as fluently as he cries a sale. Alec bought his new Reo for two reasons. One because he wanted to take his wife out riding and the other because his wife wanted to be taken out riding. Incidentally he figured out that he wouldn’t lose so much time on the road to his cottage and that thus the fish would not have so much idle time on their hands. If ever there was an obliging man, Alec Holverson is that synonym. When Alec bought the car, he had a chauffeur thrown in for a week to teach him how the car should be run according to advanced registry methods. Tuesday afternoon the chauffeur demonstrated the stability of the car by running into a hydrant at the corner of the Cash hardware store knocking it galley west. Until the water could be shut off the water mains, there was a very pretty fountain on the street. Alec was not in the car at the time, but it is figured out that if he had been, his added weight would have caused the car to tear up about a city block of the water mains. It might also be added that the chauffeur took the first train back to Eau Claire.
