Herman, Clifford A. (December 30, 1911 August 30, 2009)
Clifford A. Herman, 97, of
Dorchester, died Sunday, August 30, 2009 at the Colonial Center in
Colby.
He
was born December 30, 1911, in Wood County to Arthur and Nora
(Krackenberger) Herman.
He
was a graduate of Dorchester High School. He enjoyed playing all
sports and in 1936 he played for the Medford baseball team that won
the State Amateur Championship. Following the big win later that
year he signed with the White Sox as a first baseman and played for
them until the war.
He
served his country by serving as sergeant in the Army from
1940-1945. He fought in the invasion of Normandy at Utah Beach
during WWII,
He
married Mildred Kronschnabl.
He
was employed as the plant manager for Foremost Foods, in Owen, the
US Post Office, Meyer Building in Dorchester and co-owned
Mildy’s Dress Store.
He
was a lifelong member of St. Louis Catholic Church, VFQ in
Dorchester, and the Lion’s Club.
He
is survived by his son, Joseph (Carole) Herman, Holcombe; three
grandsons; eight great-grandchildren;
four-step-great-grandchildren; and two sister, Dorothy Hartman and
Myrtle (Tom) Glasbrenner.
He
is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and
James; and one sister, Geraldine.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Sept. 2,
at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester at 11:00 a.m.. The Rev.
Benjamin Franklin will preside.
Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 9-11:00 a.m. Burial will take place following the service at Dorchester Public Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Dorchester American Legion Post 517.
