Death Ends Career of Cyrus Stockwell - Was
Superintendent of the Omaha Road - Earlier was Agent at
Granton
Cyrus D. Stockwell died Thursday morning, January
15, 1953, in the hospital at Eau Claire, following a heart
attack. Burial in Eau Clarie followed services at the
Methodist church there Saturday.
Mr.
Stockwell was well known in Neillsville, where he spent his
boyhood. He was born in Port Huron, Mich., in 1870 as the
oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus S. Stockwell.
As
a young man he studied telegraphy and started working for the Omaha
railroad. He became station agent at Granton and was also the
agent at Marshfield.
Through his initiative and loyalty to his job and
to the railroad he was made an assistant superintendent of the
Northwestern and resided at Spooner. Then he became
superintendent at Eau Claire.
He
married Miss Helen Pickering of Granton. They had two
children who survive him, Mrs. Bernice Selvig of Washington, D. C.,
and George Stockwell of Spooner. Also there are three
grandsons, Marvin, George and David Selvig and their wives and
children. Helen Stockwell died in 1935.
The
surviving present Mrs. Stockwell was Miss Lida Rickard of Eau
Clarie. The Stockwell home is at 1714 Laurel Street in Eau
Claire.
Mr.
Stockwell was with the Northwestern railroad all of his working
life until he retired 12 years ago. Since then Mr. and Mrs.
Stockwell have divided the year between St. Petersburg, Fla., and
their home at Eau Claire.
Besides the immediate family mentioned above,
there are one brother and two sisters remaining, A. R. Stockwell of
Neillsville, Mrs. Ernest Wanner of Bismarck, N. D., and Mrs.
William Holway of Madison. The oldest sister, Charlotte Baer
Cook, preceded Mr. Stockwell in death by just one
week.
C. D. Stockwell was well known in Masonry. He was a Knight Templar and Scottish Rite Mason.
