Herbert Henchen, 89, of Neillsville died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.   
 

Herbert Carl Bruno Henchen was born July 22, 1920, in the Town of Weston, Clark County, the son of Arnold and Helen (Schroeder) Henchen.  He was educated in the Globe area and then worked in the wheat fields of North Dakota during harvest time.  In November of 1942 he entered the United States Army and served in World War II.  Herb served most of his time in the Philippines, defending the Philippine people from the Japanese.  He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.  He then returned home and owned his own milk hauling business.  He also hauled gas for the Deep Rock Company.  He was united in marriage to Irene Thoma Sept. 30, 1950, at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Globe.  Later, Herb farmed part-time and also went to work for the Nelson Filter Company.  He worked there for 19 years before retiring. 
 

He was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Globe.  He was a member of Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post 73 and Wilson-Heinz Veterans of Foreign War Post 2241 in Neillsville.  He was a longtime member of the Military Honor guard for funerals, and he was a volunteer at The Highground. 
 

Herb was an avid sheepshead player.  He enjoyed hunting and hunted until a couple years ago.  He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their school activities.   
 

Herb is survived by three children, Jim (Nina) Henchen of Neillsville, Randy (LeeAnn) Henchen, also of Neillsville and Linda (Dennis) Schutte of Marshfield.  He is further survived by six grandchildren, Rossi, Christopher, Taylor and Noah Henchen and Joshua (fiancée Andrea) and Nicholas Schutte.  He is also survived by brothers, Wilbert "Lefty" (Dorothy) Henchen and Edward Henchen;; a sister, Julia Henchen and a sister-in-law, Gertrude Henchen, all of Neillsville. 
 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; two brothers, Raymond and Leo; and his parents. 
 

Funeral services for Herb were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Globe.  Pastor John Warmuth officiated.  Music was provided by Karen Warmuth, organist, and Tosha Cole and Dawn Thoma, vocalists.  Interment was in the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Neillsville Veteran’s Council.  Visitation was held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. 
 

Honorary Casketbearers were his grandchildren.  Casket bearers were: Bruce Henchen, Charles Henchen, Gary Thoma, Greg Thoma, Jeff Thoma and Tim Thoma.
