Greeler Hen News (1953)
A
Loyal Hen Makes a "G" for Ed Greeler, her boss: -- Edward Greeler
has a hen which understands the principles of loyalty. Having
laid her daily egg in her usual fashion, she lingered long enough
to deposit upon the end of the shell a well formed letter
"G". She did not do any unusual advertising of her
accomplishment; just cackled like a good hen ought when she does
her daily duty. She left it for the Greeler family to find
taahe egg in their usual egg hunt. The Greelers do not even
know which of their hens turned this artistic trick. Their
conclusion is that it was the work of a modest hen, who understands
that the left foot ought not to know what the right foot is
doing.
The
letter "G" is formed just like the rest of the shell, out of lime
and whatever else hens put into their shells. It is raised
very perceptibly above the surface of the surrounding portion of
the shell.
Just why the hen should have made a "G" is for anybody to guess. But the most obvious answer is that she has a strong sense of appreciation. The Greelers feed her and give her a good home. They even gave her enough shell material so that she has a little to spare. So in sheer appreciation, she puts the initial letter of the family name upon her egg.
