Mead, William Harrison (Nov 19, 1883-March ?,
1911)
Milwaukee, Wis., Mar. 13, 1911
Editor of Neillsville Times, Neillsville,
Wis.
Dear Sir:
I
note with regret an account of W.H.Mead’s death at Longwood,
Clark County, Wisconsin.
I
have known Harry Mead since he first came on to Black River, Clark
County, and he took up a homestead on Sec. 34, 28, 2, w, along
about 1866.
He
used to pack his provisions on his back from Neilsville through the
mud a distance of 25 miles; solid wilderness all the way then,
except there was a little clearing at "Dutch Georges" and the old
Cauley farm and a little clearing at Greenwood.
Mr.
Mead became a very prominent logger along about 1875 to 1885.
He banked and sold a good many logs on Black River. He logged
for me several years.
He
at one time owned over 10,000 acres of as good land as there was in
Clark County. I think he sold it to H.N. Withee about
1885.
He
was a hard worker and a kind-hearted man. I wish I had space
to give you a lengthy account of his transactions with
me.
Respectfully, James L. Gates
