Sherman, Alfred Louis (25 September 1875 - 10
June 1953)
Alfred Louis Sherman, 77, better known to his
many friends as ‘Riley’, of 538 Grand Ave., Neillsville
, died at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Veteran’s
Hospital at Tomah.
Services were held June 13 from the Bergemann
Funeral Home, with the Rev. Virgil Nulton officiating at the
services. Burial took place in the Neillsville City Cemetery.
Betty Kosmosky was soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Florence Counsell
at the piano.
Mr.
Sherman was born Sept. 25, 1875, at Windon, Minn., to Charles and
Isabella (Dodge) Sherman. When he was six years old his
family moved to Neillsville where he received his education. For
several years he worked in Minnesota and Canada, building grain
elevators. He then came back to Neillsville and worked as a
painter and decorator.
Mr.
Sherman was a Spanish-American War Veteran serving from April 28,
1898, to January 4, 1899. He was wounded in action in the
left shoulder. He was a member of the Loyal Order of
Moose.
He
was married to Alva M. Gorman May 2, 1912, at St. Paul, Minn.
One son, Dale, was born to them.
Surviving besides his widow is the son, Dale, of
Lodi, Wis., and two nieces and one nephew, and a brother, Edward
Sherman, of Owen. Four brothers and two sisters are
deceased.
Military services were held at the
graveside. Members of the American Legion were pallbearers:
George Campbell, Arnold Henchen, Donald Kalsow, Harold Pischer,
Charles Poole and Harry Stricker.
Graveside rites were in charge of the following:
flag bearers, Edward Zschernitz and Gus Carl; service officer, John
Swenson; firing squad commander, Joseph Cardarelle; members of the
firing squad, Leon Stanley, Norman Drescher and George Hendrickson;
bugler, DeWayne Dux.
Spanish-American war veterans in attendance were
William Bradford and Henry Seidelman.
Out of town relatives attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sherman of Lodi and relatives from Owen and Greenwood.
