Mrs. Marvelene Butterbrodt was the recipient of the Wisconsin Chippewa Valley
School Press Association advisor of the year award at the conference held at
UW-Eau Claire on October 18, 1979. This award recognizes an outstanding area
advisor and dedicates the conference to that person. Winners of the award are
nominated by fellow advisors and selected by the board of directors and previous
winners.

The Loyal Area Chamber of Commerce honored Dr. A. P. Hable at their annual
dinner meeting.
Hable, unable to attend the dinner, was presented with his plaque on Thursday.
On it was inscribed the following: “Appreciation Award to Dr. A. P. Hable for
sincere and devoted effort, presented by friends and devoted patients from the
Loyal community.”
A native of the Bloomer area, Dr. Hable began his medical practice in Gilman. He
moved to Loyal in 1940 and still holds daily office hours in his Main Street
office.

The Loyal Area Chamber of Commerce honored Lothar Oestreich at their annual
dinner meeting.
Lothar Oestreich was honored as Loyal’s Citizen of the Year. He retired from his
service station business after having worked and owned the same station for 50
years. During the time he was a volunteer fireman for 43 years and served as
parade chairman for the Loyal Corn Festival for 20 years.

It was a festive occasion Monday night in Granton as over 300 people gathered in
the Granton High School gymnasium. The occasion was the 40th anniversary of FFA
in Granton, and the 30th anniversary of Francis Steiner as FFA advisor.
Guest speaker for the banquet was Gary Rohde, Wisconsin’s Secretary of
Agriculture. Chet Garthwaite, Granton’s first Ag teacher, was also a guest and
reminisced about old time in Granton.
Special awards were presented to several individuals who have supported the
Future Farmers of America program. These included Bob Barth, manager of the Save
Rite Building Cenetery in Neillsville, Fritz Garbisch, Granton FFA Alumni
President, school board member and former member of the chapter, and Secretary
Rohde.
Honor with a Distinguished Service Award was the John Wuethrich Grassland
Creamery Company of Greenwood. Their service to the chapter in promoting
livestock shows, the Junior Dairyman program and the Granton Fall Festival was
noted. Accepting the award for the Wuethrich Creamery Company was Howie Sturtz
II.

Bukovec, Mary Lee (13 Oct 1979)
Mary Lee Bukovec, Menomonie, and James D. Konkel, Menomonie, were married on
Saturday, October 13, 1979 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church,
Greenwood. Father Robert Houston performed the ceremony and the organist was
Mrs. Rita Stewart and the soloist was Cindye Scheuerman.
The bride’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bukovec, Greenwood, and the parents
of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Konkel, Neillsville.
The bride, given in marriage by her parents, was seen in a whit empire style
gown of Chantilly lace trimmed with Alencon lace and seed pearls. It had a Queen
Anne neckline and the bottom of the skirt was crystal pleated extending into a
chapel train. She wore a fingertip veil. Her bouquet was a cascade arrangement
of roses, baby’s breath and greenery.
The matron of honor was Mrs. Dave (Carol) Walter, Loyal, and the bridesmaids
were Mrs. Tom (Linda) Gleason, Milwaukee and Mrs. Ken (Mary Kay) Behnke, Loyal.
They were attired in spice empire waist dresses with a matching lace fringed
jacket. They carried bouquets of yellow roses, butterscotch mums, and baby’s
breath.
Joseph L. Konkel, Wisconsin Rapids, served as best man, and Marty Kwiatkowski,
Appleton, and William Bukovec, Eau Claire, were groomsmen. Richard Bukovec,
Loyal and Stephen Kwiatkowski, Oshkosh, were ushers.
There was a reception, dinner and dance held at the Loyal American Legion Hall,
Loyal.
The bride is a 1973 graduate of Greenwood High School. She attended UW-Eau
Claire for two years, and graduated in 1978 from UW-Madison in the School of
Pharmacy.
The groom is a 1970 graduate of Neillsville High School and is presently
attending UW-Stout at Menomonie.
The couple is residing at 1628 5th Street West, #5, Menomonie.

Humanities Symposium at Pigeon Lake Field Stadium, near Drummond, from Greenwood

Knute Wallin.
Sue Richmond, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Richmond, Route 2, Greenwood,
place third and will compete in national competition in May at the University of
South Carolina.

Superior performance in activities involving leadership, scholarship and
community service have qualified the Granton Future Farmers of America (FFA) as
one of the nation’s most active chapters and they will received a National
Chapter Award.
Ceremonies conferring the award on those select few chosen from over 8,000 FFA
chapters in the nation, will be held this coming week in Kansas City at the
National FFA Convention.
Granton placed in the top 10 chapters in the state, and therefore was eligible
for national competition. Activities that merited recognition on a high leverl
were the chapter’s annual Fall Festival, winning grand champion and top showmen
awards at both the county fair and junior livestock show, parent and member
banquet with the governor of Wisconsin, FFA week activities, the grade school
For for America program, a four day camping trip and the oat and battery
project, in which they collected over $400to send two handicapped boys to camp.
Attending the convention from Granton are Marvin Richmond, Nanette Daleiden,
Mary Drescher, Larry Lemon and Mrs. Steiner, their advisor. Over 20,000 members
will be in attendance at this convention, which is held in conjunction with the
American Royal Livestock Show.

Augustine, Father (29 Jul 1906 – 16 Oct 1979)
Father Augustine, who served Holy Family Parish, Willard, from 1950 to 1958,
passed away October 16, 1979 of a heart attack suffered while on a fishing trip
to Hayward.
After leaving Willard, Father “Gus”, as he was so fondly called at Willard,
returned on many occasions to serve the parish and visit his many friends in
that area.
He was born July 29, 1906.
