Montag, Ernest John (23 December 1883 - 7 May 1954) 
 

Ernest John Montag, 70, a former Chili resident died May 7, 1954, at the home of his son, Craig Montag of Augusta, following complications. 
 

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, May 10, from the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Chili, Wis.  The Rev. R. H. Browe officiated.  Interment was in the Chili Cemetery. 
 

The body lay in state beginning Sunday at the Bergemann Funeral Home in Neillsville until 11 o’clock, Monday forenoon, when it was taken to the church.  
 

Mr. Montag, son of Clarence and Elizabeth (Riedel) Montag, was born December 23, 1883, at Loyal.  He received his elementary education in the Nasonville and Lynn schools and was married to Elsie Brooks in August 1907.  In his earlier years he was a cheesemaker in the Lynn and Chili area and later moved to a farm in the Chili community, where he farmed until 1934.  After retiring from farming he worked for ten years for the Marshfield Manufacturing Co. and later helped out in the cheese factory at Chili.  He was making his home with his son at Augusta at the time of his death. 
 

Mr. Montag is survived by two sons, Craig of Augusta and Clifford of Owen, three grandchildren and one brother, Herman Montag of Chili. 
 

Deceased members of his family are his parents, wife and two children.
