Gleanings

 

The schools close today for the holiday vacation.

 

E. C. Webster of Neillsville, Sundayed at the home of F. M. Carter.

 

R. S. Hummel was taken very ill Tuesday with an attack of pneumonia.

 

Fred and Will Oelig went to Medford Monday, where they are engaged in scaling.

 

John T. Fatizinger was over from Fairchild jollying our business men Wednesday.

 

The Presbyterian and Baptist Sunday Schools will hold joint exercises in the Baptist church Monday evening.

 

Rev. Scafe did not preach Sunday evening, he being under the weather and obliged to take care of his throat which is easily affected by colds.

 

Lemuel Fouts, who moved with his folks to Perkinstown last fall, is working over in Beaver.

 

An epidemic of grip or some similar affection seems to be prevalent and its the popular thing to be ailing.

 

A load of young people drove over from Loyal Sunday evening and took in the Epworth League meeting.

 

Archie Rogers was unfortunate enough Tuesday, while working in the woods, to slash his right hand with an ax. Dr. Churchill dressed the wound for him.

 

John Lawver killed two wolves recently. He was in the office recently and showed us the ears of one, which measured fourteen inches across.

 

Rev. D. W. Hulburt, secretary of the Wisconsin Baptist State Convention Board, was in the city Wednesday evening and conducted an interesting service at the Baptist church. It was his first visit here for several years and his presence was much enjoyed.

 

Maj. Spencer is home.

 

Wm. Andrews alias "Buffalo Bill," is home from Medford recuperating.

 

Oscar Fricke is in northern Minnesota buying hay for the Clark County Hay & Grain Co.

 

Wren Randles returned Tuesday from a visit to Alma Center.

 

Nels Larson and three sons were down from Longwood, Wednesday.

 

Louis Radke and Clydia Gordon of the town of Loyal were united in marriage at the M. E. Parsonage Wednesday eve, Dec. 7.

 

Allie Schofield arrived home from Freeport Tuesday evening. Tomorrow morning Hugh is expected to come, accompanied by E. T. Morrison.

 

A. W. McCall of Fairchild, was a Greenwood caller the first of the week on his way north where he is going in the woods with his team. He is a brother-in-law to George Cummings.

 

Little Everette Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Peterson, swallowed a six penny nail Tuesday forenoon and in the afternoon the parents took him to Eau Claire where he was safety relieved of the nail.

 

Geo. Brooks drove over from Lynn Saturday evening and spent Sunday with the family of Postmaster Hartson. He brought Mrs. Jane Towle, who has been spending the past two weeks in Lynn, with him.

 

P. K. Peterson of Withee, was doing business in town Monday and was a Gleaner caller. He reports that the output of his brick yard there was the heaviest this last season that he has had since he started in business seven years ago.

 

Wm Smith, E. C. Cosper and E. C. Clark who have been canvassing Greenwood and vicinity for the Chicago Portrait Co. left Wednesday for Augusta. They report a good business here.

 

Thos. Patten is the name of the new brakeman who came Monday evening from Fond du Lac to take the place of N. E. Harris. He is a married man and is looking for a place into which he can move and become a citizen with us.

 

Mrs. John Blecha died Tuesday night at twelve o'clock. She has been almost a constant sufferer for the past five years and during the past few weeks has been practically helpless. The funeral will occur Saturday at ten o'clock a.m. in the Loyal Catholic church.

 

Lee and Joe Baxter, who recently bought what is known as the Shanks place, returned to their home in Linden, Wis., Wednesday morning.

 

Dr. Julian Baker of Warrens, is visiting his mother and brother here for a few days.

 

A girl was born Monday morning to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Twichell at the home of Aug. Fradette who is the proud grandfather.
