Melva P. Guzman, 89, Loyal, died on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at Saint Josrph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal. The Rev. Jerome Naduvathaniyil officiated. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

 

Melva Phyllis Catlin was born on Oct. 5, 1920, in Loyal, to Hakill and Vivcian (nee Bassett) Catlin. She was raised and received her education in Loyal, graduating from Loyal High School on May 11, 1938. She then attended beauty school at the School of Cosmetics Arts, Eau Claire. She worked as a beautitian in Stevens Point and Marshfield. She married Raymond F. Guzman on July 29, 1942, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Stevens Point. She moved back to Loyal where she worked at the Loyal Public Library for 29 yeqrs, most of those years as the librarian. After her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, cooking, baking and her plants. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

 

She will be dearly missed by her children, Sandra Gutzman, Loyal, Thomas (Sharon) Guzman, Friendship, and Jack Guzman, Madison; grandchildren, Jill (Daryl) Kubly, Adams, Amy Guzman, Middleton, Ryan Guzman, Middleton; great-granddaughters, Ashley Kubly and Alyssa Kubly; two brothers, C,\lark (Jan) Catlin, Mountain Ranch, Calif., and Franklin Catlin, Marysville, Mich.; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding her in death were her parents; and two sisters, Eleanore Engevold and Gwendolyn "Pidy" Bruckert.

 

The family asks that memorials be given to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
