Bemis, Walter (14 April 1865 - 20 July
1955)
Walter Bemis, age 90, of Humbird, died July 20 in
Neillsville. He had undergone surgery the week prior to his
death.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 22,
1955, at the Humbird Methodist Church. The Rev. Virgil Holmes of
the Neillsville church officiated. Interment was made in the
Town of Mentor Cemetery. The body reposed at the Georgas
Funeral Home until Friday, when it was taken to the Humbird Church
an hour before services.
Mr.
Bemis, a retired farmer, was born April 14, 1865, at Plainview,
Minn., to Hiram and Charlotte (Smith) Bemis. He received his
education in the schools at Plainview. For three years
following his marriage to Amanda Church on July 24, 1890, at
Clintonville, he made his home in Plainview. In 1893 they
moved to Wisconsin where they have resided for 57 years. They
made Humbird their home since their retirement from farming on
April 10, 1941. He served his town as assessor for several
years.
Mr.
Bemis had been failing in health for the past four years. Mr.
and Mrs. Bemis would have observed their 65th wedding
anniversary had he lived another four days.
He
is survived by the following children: Mrs. Ira (Ina) Meacham of
Spencer; Earl Bemis of Neillsville; Clayton Bemis, Newaygo, Mich.;
Percy Bemis, Humbird; Mrs. William (Lola) Dimmitt, Norfolk, Va.; 15
grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Three sisters and five brothers preceded him in
death.
Pallbearers were: Archie Fradenburg, Willard
Putman, Ernest Matti, Henry E. Laffe, George Dimmitt and A. L.
Sparks. Carol Bemis, Francis Bemis, Mrs. Wesley Hansen, Mrs.
Neil McReynolds had charge of the flowers.
Out of town relatives attending the rites were: Mr. and Mrs. Ira Meacham of Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Bemis and daughter, Newaygo, Mich.; Mrs. William Dimmitt, Norfolk, Va.; Robert Wood, Mrs. Barbara Fredricks, Oshkosh; Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Meacham, Arlington Heights, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Adler, Round Lake, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Meacham, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Olmstead, Bear Creek, Wis.; Mr. Erick Kerstner, Bowler; Grace Breyer, Appleton; Mrs. Neil McReynolds, and Mrs., Wesley Hansen, Fremont, Mich.; Mrs. Curtiss Slaverson, Plainview, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ruka, Mrs. Gus Okrueg, and Mrs. Roda Okrueg, Goodell, Iowa; Mrs. Rachel Olmstead, Clintonville, Mr. and Mrs. William Schenk, Anoka, Minn.; Mrs. Mabel Merrill, Minneapolis; Mrs. C. L. Kesey, St. Paul Park, Minn.; and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harris of Augusta.
