Helwig, Louise (28 February 1877 - 6 May
1956)
Mrs. Louise Helwig, 79, died Sunday at
the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Victor J.
Anderson, on Court Street, Neillsville.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday
at 8 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home. The body was taken
early Wednesday morning to Jefferson, where services were held in
the afternoon. The Rev. R. C. White officiated. Burial
was made in the cemetery at Rome.
Mrs. Helwig (nee Abel) was born February
28, 1877, in Germany. When she was 12 years old her parents came to
this country, locating in Jefferson County, where she received her
formal education.
She was married November 21, 1895, to
Charles Helwig in Jefferson County. Following their marriage
they farmed for several years in the southern part of Wisconsin,
coming to Neillsville in 1923, when they purchased the Hamilton
Hotel on Seventh Street. The building is now known as the
Lorraine Apartments. They continued to operate the hotel until the
death of Mr. Helwig in 1943. Since that time she has made her
home with her children, and for the past several years had been in
failing health.
She is survived by the following children: Lawrence Helwig, and Mrs. Victor (Lottie) Anderson, Neillsville; Mrs. Roland (Hazel) Wagner, Madison; Mrs. Bernard (Isabelle) Pietenpol of Granton; a sister, Mrs. Edward (Marie) Helmenstine of Madison; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
