Roth, Leonard J.  (09 JULY 1917-4 JAN 1947)

Leonard J. Roth, 29, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Roth of Loyal and a former captain in the army air forces, died on Saturday, Jan. 4, at Indianapolis, Ind., where he had been employed for the past 10 months by the International Harvester Corporation. Death was caused by pneumonia and other complications following an emergency appendectomy.

Mr. Roth was born at Milford, Ia., on July 9, 1917. After living for two years at Milford, he came with his parents to Loyal, living here for the remainder of his life, with the exception of the time spent in service and at Indianapolis.

He attended St. Anthony’s Catholic school for eight years, was graduated from the Loyal high school in 1935, and entered the army air forces on Dec. 26, 1939.

In May, 1943, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and was discharged in February, 1946, with the rank of captain.

Surviving besides his parents, are nine brothers and sisters, George Roth Jr. of Unity, Donald, Virgil, Raphael, Margaret and Bernadine all of Milwaukee, and Joe, Rita and Loretta, at home, and Miss Helen Meagher of New Haven, Conn.

A requiem high mass was read on Wednesday morning morning, Jan. 8, by the Rev Fr. Aloys Zinthefer, and burial was in the parish cemetery. He was given a military funeral with former servicemen acting as pallbearers, firing squad, color guards and bearers. Pallbearers were Earl Theisen, Paul Ampe, Richard Andraska, Herbert Braun, Paul Davel and Roland Seeman. Color guard and bearers were Donald Howley, Norman Prior. Jerome Bertz and Kenneth Weyhmiller. The bugler was William Theisen Jr., and the members of the firing squad were Arnold Anderson, William Davel, Albert Degenhardt, Dan Wolter, Wilbert Kehrberg, Kenneth Kanneberg, Donald Wehhmiller and Paul Schmidt, with Henry Olson in charge.

The flag which was used for the ceremony was presented to the family of the deceased by Claude Catlin and Jesse Raab, veterans of World War l.

Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Roth, Raphael, Virgil, Margaret and Bernadine Roth, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Bremer and Ambrose Murphy of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. George Roth Jr. and Emil Martin of Unity; Miss Helen Meagher of New Haven, Conn.; W. P. Hemphill, J. H. Hemphill and Miss Mae McQuire of Spencer, Ia., and Mr. and Mrs. Al Hoover and Herman Martin of Marshfield.

The Tribune extends to the bereaved its sympathy in the loss of a beloved son and brother.
