During a recent Wisconsin Assembly Floor Session, Rep. Donna Rozar (R
Marshfield) honored Erin Martin, a volunteer firefighter/first responder from
the Chili/Fremont Fire Department as the 69th Assembly District’s First
Responder of the Year.
All Assembly representatives had the opportunity to seek nominations and award a
first responder from their district. The First Responder of the Year Award is a
special program in the Wisconsin State Assembly that recognizes and honors first
responders who go above and beyond the call of duty in serving their community.
For 2023, Erin Martin of Chili was nominated and selected as this year’s honoree
from the 69th Assembly District. Erin has over 25 years of experience with the
Chili/ Fremont Fire Department, achieving the rank of lieutenant and currently
serving as the president of the department.
“She has displayed remarkable skill and talent in leading the department,” Rozar
wrote in an Oct. 18 press release. “To prevent citizens from bearing the expense
of a new fire hall and community center, Erin secured a grant for its
construction. She serves with genuine empathy during stressful calls, and
provides compassionate care to those she serves.
“From responding to emergency calls, to leading the department with thoughtful
strategic planning and vision, Erin is willing to do what is necessary to bring
quality services to her community. Her leadership is exceptional and I am
honored to recognize her in the Wisconsin State Assembly as the 69th Assembly
District’s First Responder of the Year.”

Hanne, Arlyn (15
Jan 1944 - 29 Oct 2023)
Arlyn Hanne joined
his parents, Harold and Irene (Syring) Hanne, in heaven, on October 29, 2023. He
was born in Colby on January 15, 1944. Arlyn graduated from Colby High School in
1962. While growing up on the family farm, he raised a crow and trained it to
sit on his shoulder.
After graduation, Arlyn went where opportunity and advancements took him, first
cultivating his family farm while working at Trailblazer and raising his young
family. He also worked at Wick Building Systems, Wausau Engineered Bodies, and
Wausau Homes. When Arlyn grew tired of problem solving and answering phones, he
turned his off and took a job driving an 18-wheeler. He retired from Golden
Guernsey Dairy in 2006 after 22 years of service and many safety awards.
Arlyn was generous with his time and support. He always noticed the good in
people and was free with his compliments for a job well done, but he was a
realist and didn’t take people, situations, or the world for granted.
He loved his dogs, especially Augie, Buford and B J. The outdoors called
to him. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling. His
adventures took him to 48 of the 50 states and included Canada and Mexico.
Arlyn was a family man, and he loved and raised his children: Ken (Nancy) Hanne,
Mahtomedi, Minn., Keith Hanne, Park Falls, and Lisa Hanne, Wausau. He married
Judy (Bohn) in 1989 in the home they built together and became the father to her
children: Lee Kowalski, Morresville, N.C., Rebecca Wilebski, Fredericksburg,
Va., and Andrew O’Heron, Middleton. Besides his children, Arlyn’s memory will
live on through his 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Arlyn may
have been an only child, but his “family” is huge. He was friendly with everyone
and could take on large groups like he was born to do it. He will be greatly
missed by all those lives he touched.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Nov. 3 from 2 - 6 p.m. at Brainard
Funeral Home Everest Chapel, 5712 Memorial Court, Weston. Burial will be
private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to: Aspirus
at Home Hospice.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Jason and all of the
staff at Aspirus at Home Hospice for the love and care given to Arlyn and his
family.
You’ve earned your wings, so fly, and continue to watch over us.
