Rabies (1958)
Three cases of rabies out of three
laboratory examinations completed is the record for Arthur
Schroeder, conservation warden for Clark County.
The latest positive report came from the
head of a skunk which had bitten a dog belonging to B. H. Bohac of
the Hatfield area; on a Merrillan route. The skunk was killed
after it had attacked the Bohac dog August 16. Mr. Schroeder
received the report Monday.
Observing that "three out of three is a
high percentage," Mr. Schroeder said he had sent the fourth to the
state laboratory for examination a day or two before the one which
had attacked the Bohac dog. This skunk, however, had not
bitten anything, insofar as authorities knew, and the examination
therefore was not labeled to be rushed.
Mr. Schroeder expressed concern over what
might happen here when hunting seasons open, and suggested that
people owning dogs can avoid danger of rabies infection by having
their dogs inoculated. The inoculations retain effectiveness
for about a year.
"A dog and a skunk will tangle every time," he said.
