Welgos, Walter L. "Wally" (15 March 1922
- 5 March 2010) With Flag
Walter L. "Wally" Welgos, age 87, of
Thorp, died on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Sacred Heart Hospital in
Eau Claire.
He was born on March 15, 1922 in
Bartlesville, OK, the son of the late Tony and Katherine (Resnick)
Welgos. After the death of his father, the family relocated to
Lublin, WI. In his younger years, along with his family,
Wally enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing with the Lublin
baseball team.
He served in the U. S. Marine Corp during
World War II. He was united in marriage on November 18, 1946,
to Ella Lencz. He began his career in the grocery business in
1947, operating store in Owen, Stanley and Thorp. The family
settled in Thorp in 1962, taking over the IGA grocery store where
Country Floral is presently located. In 1964, a new store was
built where Hank’s Furniture is located. In 1972, a new
and larger store was built in the location of the current grocery
store. Walter and Ella, along with their children, operated
the IGA Foodliner until the sale of their business in
2004.
After retirement, Wally enjoyed watching
baseball, spending time with family and friends, and trips to the
casino. He was a proud member of the Thorp American Legion,
Moose Lodge and Holy Assumption Orthodox Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ella, of
Thorp; two sons: Tony (Kathy) of Aspen, CO and Danny (Maureen) of
Thorp, WI; two daughters: Mary (Keith) Schmall of Boise, ID and
Anne (Harry) Parks of Sheboygan Falls, WI; two sisters: Anne Ziemba
of Thorp, WI and Bernice Pucillo of Petoskey, MI; one brother: Joe (MaryAnn) Jasek of Couderay, WI; six grandchildren: Ryan, Andy,
Mark and Jacqueline Welgos; Kevin and Katherine Schmall.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
one brother, Andrew; and one grandson, Elliot Welgos.
Wally will be remembered for his smile
and generous heart. He was proud of his community involvement
and achievements throughout his life.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00
a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Holy Assumption Orthodox
Church in Lublin, WI. Fr. Ted Wojcik will officiate and
burial will follow in the church cemetery. A gathering of
friends and family will begin at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the
service.
His family would like to thank the staff
at Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Victory and St. Joseph’s
Hospital for the wonderful care given to our husband and father
over the last several months.
