Roth, Bernice E. (Martens) (April 8, 1920
- March 9, 2010)
Bernice E. Roth, age 89, Colby, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Golden LivingCenter Continental Manor Nursing Home under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.
Bernice was born April 8, 1920, in the Town of Unity, the daughter
of Emil and Rose (Domer) Martens.
She attended Maplewood Elementary School and graduated from Unity High School. She went on to Stevens Point to college and earned her teaching certificate. She married George Roth on June 29, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colby. She was gainfully employed as a one-room school teacher for five years.
Bernice was an active long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic
Church, past president of St. Mary’s School PTA, a member and
contributor to Clark Co. Historical Society and Rural Arts
Museum. Bernice enjoyed reading, baking, and writing. She
wrote and published "Life in the 1920’s, 30’s,
40’s."
Bernice is lovingly survived by her children, Eileen Roth of
Milwaukee, Joan (John) Laabs of Waupaca, Verlyn (Linda) Roth of
Madison, Marlene (Jim) Paul of Henderson, NV, Glen (Sue) Roth of
Unity, Jerry (Deb) Roth of Unity, Jean (Dave) Van Hammond of
Stevens Point, David (Sue) Roth of Greenwood, Neil (Deanna) Roth of
Unity, Carolyn (Rick) Golz of Dorchester, and Mona (Ted) Fox of
Wausau. She is the proud grandma of 27 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her sister,
Deloris (Martens) Duwe of Sussex.
Bernice is preceded in death by her beloved husband, George; one
brother, John Martens; two sisters, Pauline (Martens) Kuester and
Carrie Martens; and twin grandsons.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 12,
2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in
Colby. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic
Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, March 11, 2010, from
4-7 p.m. at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford and on
Friday at the church in Colby from 10 a.m. until time of service. A
Rosary Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral
home in Abbotsford.
In Lieu of flowers memorials are appreciated to St. Mary’s
Catholic School.
