Burr, John (1839 - 22 Apr 1912)
John Burr, a highly respected citizen of
this city, died Monday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John
Carter. Mr. Burr was born in Yorkshire, England, in
1839. When a lad of eight years he came to this country, and
having no one to care for him, he was compelled to earn his own
living from that time on. He came to Wisconsin when a young
man and settled in Green county. He enlisted at the age of 21
years as a private in Co. E, 8th Reg. Wisconsin Vol.
Infy., under Capt. William C. Young. At the battle of Corinth
on Oct. 3, 1862, he received a gunshot wound which caused a
permanent injury, and as a result of the wound he was confined in
the hospital at Mound City, Ill., until he received his honorable
discharge.
Mr. Burr was united in marriage to Miss
Emeline Crowell on March 15, 1863, in Green county and they resided
there until in 1894 when they moved to Blanchardville, Wis.
There they united with the United Brethren church. At that
time there was no church of that kind there, and Mr. Burr helped
build the church. They removed to this city in April, 1904,
that they might spend their last years in the vicinity of their
daughter, Mrs. Carter. Mrs. Burr died on May 1, 1906, and
since that time Mr. Burr made his home with his daughter.
Mr. Burr was a man of strong personality
and was possessed of most honorable and sterling qualities.
His was a strong Christian character, wherever he might be becoming
a member and worker in some church. He united with the Free
Baptist church in 1878, attended the United Brethren church at
Blanchardville, and while a resident of this city was a member of
the Congregational church. Mr. Burr was a respected and
honored member of the G.A.R. post of this city.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Carter of this city and Mrs. Chas. Ash of Blue Earth, Minn., and also by five grandchildren.
