Handtke, Mayme (3 July 1873 - 22 Oct 1912)

Mrs. Louis Handtke died Tuesday morning at the Sacred Heart hospital at Eau Claire.  She had been taken to the hospital Friday for treatment and seemed to be improving, but Monday night she suffered a relapse and passed into a peaceful sleep which knew no awakening.  Her husband and brother, John, were with her at the time of her death and the remains were brought here Tuesday night for interment.

Mrs. Handtke was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hughes and was born on the Ridge, July 3, 1873.  She graduated from Dixon college and for years she served in the capacity as an expert stenographer for Judge O’Neill and S.M. Marsh.  She was united in marriage to Louis Handtke on Nov. 24, 1897, and for a number of years resided on a farm on the Ridge, later removing to this city, which continued to be their home until Death overtook Mrs. Handtke.

Mayme, as she was know to all her friends, was possessed of inherent kindness and cheeriness which endeared her in the hearts of the entire community.  She was at all times ready and willing to assist any in time of need and the part in life which she took was marked with kindly deeds, words and actions.  Her death is a matter of sincere grief to many in this city, for she was universally honored and respected.  She is survived by her husband and little daughter Marion, her mother, sister, Maggie, brothers, James Dan, John, Will, Archie and Michael and half-brother, Sam Cook.  Mrs. Handtke will be laid to rest Friday morning at 9 o’clock, services to be held at St. Mary’s catholic church.
