Klein, Frantz (18 Aug 1838 - 3 Apr 1913)

Frantz Klein, an aged gentleman residing this side of the Mound, was found dead in the field adjoining his house last Saturday morning.  Friday Mr. Bloche and family, neighbors of Mr. Klein, noticed that the stock had not been fed and that there was no evidence of Mr. Klein about the place.  Mr. Bloche went over and fed the stock and not seeing Mr. Klein called Herman Carl over.  Search failed to disclose the whereabouts of Mr. Klein and Saturday morning the gentlemen returned for a further search.  They entered the house and not finding the owner they searched the buildings and adjoining premises.  In the field a short distance from the house, the body of Mr. Klein was found cold in death, lying face down.

The district attorney and Dr, Monk were summoned and an investigation made.  There was no trace of violence upon the body, and no footprints about the premises which would indicate foul play, so a coroner’s jury was not called.  It seems very evident that the old gentleman, who lived alone, while temporarily deranged, had left the house either Thursday or Friday and started across the field and that death had overtaken him there.  He had been in poor health for some time and at times his mental condition was not the best.

Mr. Klein was born in Germany and was aged 74 years, 7 months and 17 days.  His wife died some years ago and since that time he has lived alone.  Not much of his history is known for he was reticent about himself, but it is understood that he has a son in the west.  He was a pleasant old gentleman and his untimely demise is sincerely regretted by his many friends.
