Wiric, John (05 JAN 1860 - 12 FEB 1948)
John Wiric, for many years a resident of Loyal, passed away early
Thursday morning, Feb. 12. Born in Sandusky (now Hill Point, Wis.)
on Jan. 5, 1860, he was the son of John and Mary Corr Wiric. His
father, an officer in the Civil War, was killed in the battle of
Cold Harbor, Md.
Mr. Wiric was graduated from the Winona (Minn.) Normal college and
taught school in Neillsville, before going to work for the Foster
Mercantile Company of Fairchild in 1882. He came to Loyal in 1890
and entered into partnership with Will Mulligan and A. E. Lawrence
in the operation of a general merchandise store. About 10 years
later the business was sold to B. W. Colby.
Later he opened another store and continued in business here until
1923, when he sold out and moved to Minneapolis where he operated a
grocery store until 1937. Since then he has been living with his
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank McGonical, here.
As a pioneer merchant in this community, Mr. Wiric is remembered
not so much for his success as a businessman as much for his
kindness, consideration and patience in his dealings with others
during the many periods of adversity that come to those pioneers
who build a town out of a wilderness.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Blanche LeSard of Minneapolis and
Mrs. Frank (Mary) McGonigal of Loyal; a son, Victor of Quincy,
Ill.; two nieces, Mrs. Catherine Kelly of Madison and Mrs, Frances
Loesser of Milwaukee; three grandchildren, James H. Clark of Los
Angeles, Cal., John Roger Clark of Berkeley, Cal., and Mrs. Verna
Swanson of Minneapolis, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 9 o’clock Sataurday morning
with the Rev. Fr. Aloys Zinthefer officiating at the requiem mass
at St. Anthony’s Catholic church and burial was in the parish
cemetery.
The pallbearers were Bert Brown, Ed Bertz, L. A. Davel, James
Bertz, William Theisen and Frank Degenhardt.
The Tribune extends to the survivors its sympathy in their
loss.
