Schmocker, John D. (1907? - 17 JAN 1956)

While enroute home from a two week visit with their son, John and family, at Arcadia, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schmocker received word of his death Tuesday of last week.  The Schmockers returned home on Wednesday.

John hadn’t lived in Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) since graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1924, but did have a host of friends in the community whom he kept in contact with during his frequent visits here.

Only 48 years of age, death came to him at almost the same moment present day members of the Arcadia city Council were making an absentia presentation of a plaque of appreciation for his services to the city, which he had served as mayor.  He passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1956, in St. Luke’s Hospital where he was being treated at the time his parents visited him.  His health had been failing for the past two years and had been hospitalized frequently during this period.

Presented for inspection by members of the city council, the plaque read: "John A. Schmocker, Mayor 1952 - 54, Councilman 1950 - 52, in appreciation of his devotion and his service to the people of Arcadia."  The plaque will be presented to Mr. Schmoker’s widow.

The Schmockers lived at 450 Cambridge Drive, Arcadia, where they had made their home for the past nine years.  At the time he left the council he was appointed by the board of supervisors as chairman of the Los Angeles County Watershed Commission, a post he held until his death.

He was a member of Theodore Roosevelt Lodge, F and AM of Green Bay, Wis., Wis. Scottish Rite, Al Malaikah Temple of the Shrine Club.  He was graduated from the Owen school system and a graduate of the University of Minnesota.

Mr. Schmocker leaves, in addition to his widow, Mrs. Amy Barrett Schmocker, two daughters, Judith Ann and Susan Louise Schmocker, a son, John Barrett Schmocker, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schmocker, city.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 20, at 10:00 a.m. from the Church of the Transfiguration, Episcopal, of which Mr. Schmocker was a member.
