Clayton Braun, Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) farmer who had been deer hunting with bow and arrow Saturday and Sunday, quit the hunt early Sunday afternoon in order to keep an appointment with his wife.  On his way home he shot a five-point buck at a distance of approximately 240 feet.  It was his 13th deer taken with bow and arrow.  "It was lucky 13," said Clayton, as he told of getting the buck while on his way home from two days of hunting.

While driving through the town of Seif on a fire lane road, Mr. Braun saw the buck in the distance.  He stopped his car, strung his bow and advanced quietly.  The arrow hit the deer causing a fatal wound.  The buck ran some distance before falling, but it was bleeding so that it was easy to track the deer.

Mr. Braun hunted with approximately 50 hunters of the Black River Bowmen’s Club, northern and southern division, which has members from Neillsville to Owen-Withee.

Seven deer were taken Saturday and Sunday while the club members were hunting in Mentor Township.  The group camped Saturday night on the Robert Bell farm, east of Humbird.  The seven successful deer hunters included: Melvin Alperstett, Darrel Horn, Arthur Franz, Terry Stevens, John Arnold, John Wall and Lewis Walde.  Knute Wallin of Greenwood shot a red fox with bow and arrow in the Mentor Township hunt.

Clayton Braun, who is built like a blacksmith, has been vying for top honros in the Black River Bowmen’s Club with Leslie Jens of Owen, who also has taken 13 deer with bow and arrow.  Mr. Braun also has the unchallenged national championship for taking a deer at greatest distance, 393 feet, in 1957 near Lake Eau Claire, a spike buck.  His son Clayton Jr. "Butch", now of Eau Claire, has taken six deer with arrow, and his sons, Gary and David have one each.
