Prochazka Store (Fire - 17 May 1928)
Thursday forenoon, smoke was discovered issuing from the basement of Prochazka Bros’ Store. The fire alarm was given and a quick response made by the fire company. The smoke was so dense it was hard at first to locate the fire, but soon it was found to be in a pile of boxes and banana crates near the rear end of the basement, and was quickly extinguished. The origin of the fire is uncertain, but it is believed that it started from a cigarette stub thrown into the doorway of the basement by someone passing through the alley, and lodging in the dry packing material in a banana crate. The loss, which was not great, was covered by insurance.
