Arthur R. Laffe, 89, of Humbird passed away Sunday, July 4, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family, while under the care of Black River Hospice.  He was born Dec. 30, 1920, to Louis and Emma (Rieder) Laffe in Humbird.

Arthur spent his whole life in Humbird.  He was part of the last graduating class of Humbird High School in 1939.  Following high school and marriage, Arthur joined the Army where he proudly served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Bobb July 21, 1941.  She preceded him in death in 1991.

Arthur worked as a rural mail carrier for over 30 years.  He started out, when first married, as a butcher in his Uncle Henry’s store; then spent three years in the military, serving his country of which he was always proud.  He spent a short period with the railroad and as a part-time mechanic at the Gearing Garage, and Johnson Garage.  He ended his working career with the Town of Humbird for about 20 years where he retried "again" at the age of 81.  Arthur was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Humbird, and a member of Melcher-Matti American Legion Post $320, Humbird, being a member for 65 years.  He also was a volunteer fireman for 54 years.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter.  Arthur enjoyed playing cards, dice, dominoes, cribbage, watching Wheel of Fortune and tinkering with old tractors and motors.

The highlight of his later years was taking a trip with his children November of 2009 to see the World War II and other memorials and going to Arlington Cemetery.

Arthur is survived by his children, Maureen (Bernard) Holman of Auburndale, Jacqueline (Clarence) Morgan of Sparta, Terry (David) Frederick of Black River Falls, David (Linda) Laffe of Humbird; 13 grandchildren, Chad, Melissa, Jennifer, Michele, Jeffrey, Christopher, Karen, Jason, Adam, Jason, Erin, Barry, and Renelle; 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Hilda Sutton of Merrillan, Esther Haugstad of Black River Falls; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie; second wife, Agnes; parents, Louis and Emma; and brothers, Herman.

Memorial services for Arthur will be held Sunday, July 18, 2010, at noon, at the Humbird Community Hall, Humbird. Rev. Patricia Trotter will be officiating.  Melcher-Matti American Legion Post $320 of Humbird will conduct military honors.  There will be a gathering starting at 11 a.m. until the time of service at the community center.

Memorials may be given to the Black River Hospice.

Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home of Hixton is assisting the family with arrangements.
