Nelson, Alice  (19 NOV 1914-02 JUNE 1948)

 

Alice A. Nelson was born on Nov. 19, 1914, at Chetek. She attended the Washington grade school in the town of Sioux Creek, Baron county, and was graduated from the Chetek high school and Eau Claire State Teachers college. She taught school at Vance Creek, west of Prairis Farm, Loyal and Lake Geneva.

 

In Jan. 1943, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, receiving her basic training at Daytona Beach, Fla., and officers training at Fort Des Moines, Ia. She was then sent to

Baltimore, Md., where she served as a recruiting officer. In July of the same year she entered an army hospital ay Valley Forge, Pa., and was later transferred to Walter Reed General hospital in Washington D.C., where she was given a medical discharge in Sept. 1943.

 

After that she was able to teach school at Englewood, N.J., for a short term and a half. She received treatment at several hospitals and passed away at Luther hospital in Eau Claire on June 2, 1948.

 

Left to mourn her loss are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Nelson, of Chetek, a brother, William E. Nelson, of Sand Creek; a sister, Mrs. Reuben Hovland, of Chetek; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Karen Hayer, of Ashland, other relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, at the Zion Lutheran church in Sand Creek, with the Rev. G. Almquist officiating. Interment was in Lake View cemetery at Chetek.
