Helm, Arthur  (19 AUG 1920- 10 APR 1945)

 

Final burial rites were held Saturday for the late S/Sgt. Arthur Helm, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Axel Helm, who was killed in action near Berlin, Germany, on Apr 10, 1945.

 

The Rev. Fr. Aloys Zinthefer officiated at the requiem high mass in St. Anthony’s Catholic church. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

 

The remains arrived from overseas under military escort late Wednesday night and was taken to the Loyal funeral home to await the requiem service.

 

Military rites at the grave included firing of a final salute, taps by Howard Sturtz Jr. and presentation of the American flag which had covered the casket. The presentation to the soldier’s mother was made by M/Sgt. Paul Kasalege.

 

Active pallbearers, all veterans of World War ll were: Donald Weyhmiller, Paul Davel, Wilbur Kehrberg, John Gerdes, Dale Kauffman and Albert Degenhardt. Honorary pallbearers were American Legion veterans of World War l: Perry Volk, Claude Catlin, Jesse Raab, Vern Kauffman, Philip Capelle, Edd Dobbe, Chester Smith and Leo Meyer.

 

Arthur was born in Loyal on Aug. 19, 1920, and was graduated from the Loyal high school in 1938. He worked as a carpenter with his father until entering the service in July 1942, He served in Europe.

 

Surviving besides his parents are five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Douglas (Dolores) Adair and James Helm of Milwaukee, Florence Helm of Eau Claire, and Richard and Marie Helm of Loyal. His grandfather, Frank Bauer, lives here.

 

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Bauer and children of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Bauer and Mrs. Albert Froeba and children, Paul and Isabel of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. Roman Renz and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Renz of Jefferson, Miss Florence Helm of Eau Claire, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Adair, James Helm and Verland McCann of Milwaukee.
