OWEN -- Sherman E. Gosse, 91, of Owen died May 19, 2010, at the Clark County Health Care Center.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Longwood Emmanuel Lutheran Church. A memorial gathering will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery in the town of Hixon.
Sherman was born March 28, 1919, to Ernest and Mary (Henschel) Gosse. Sherman served in the U.S. Army. He was inducted Aug. 29, 1941, and had his training at Fort Sheridan, Ill., where he specialized in instrument repair.
He was assigned to the 912 Sig Co. Dep. (AVN) and for the following three years served in the Philippines and Australia as part of the Pacific Theatre of operations. He was involved with the New Guinea Guadal Canal Campaign.
Decorations and medals received include the American Defense Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two bronze battle stars, six overseas service bars, one service stripe along with a Good Conduct Medal.
After his honorable discharge from the Army on Oct. 12, 1945, Sherman worked as an auto mechanic with his brother Harold in Lake Forest, Ill. After the death of his father in 1952, he returned to his parents' home near Longwood, where he dairy farmed until early 1974. He then worked at the Longwood feed mill until he retired in 1982.
He is survived by his brothers, Edward Gosse of Withee and Lavern Gosse of Appleton; and his sister, Gertrude Kolpanen of Marshfield.
