Several area students received Associate Degrees and other awards at the annual Awards Convocation at the UW. Center, Marshfield-Wood County, May 1, 1979.

Randy Furman, Rt. 2, Loyal; June Grendys, Rt. 2, Spencer; Janice Roberts, Rt. 1, Granton and Stevens Todd, Rt. 2, Granton, received Associate of Arts degrees. Todd was also awarded a certificate for first place in sports writing in the UW Center System Journalism evaluation.

Receiving Associate of Science degrees were Michael Foth, 514 LaSalle, Street, Spencer; Barbara Krultz and Gary Krultz, Greenwood; Loren Meddaugh, Rt. 2, Granton, and Richard Weidensee, Rt. 2, Granton. Meddaugh also earned placement on the Dean’s List for two semesters.

John Burke, 200 S. Chestnut Street, and Jeff Graves, 404 Douglas, both of Spencer, received continuing student scholarships for next year. The scholarships are $300 each.

Colleen Berger, Rt. 1, Granton, earned placement on the Dean’s List for three semesters. She was also the recipient of a journalism award for outstanding contributions to journalism at the UW Center. As editor of “Insight,” the student newspaper, she accepted the award of best newspaper in the UW Center System, a state award an an All American award from the Associated Collegiate Press, a national award.

Mrs. Berger also received first place in on-the-spot editorial and honorable mention in news writing at the annual UW Center journalism workshop. Wendy Gowey, 703 South Park, Spencer, also received an award for on-the-spot news writing in the same competition.

Bio: Zimmermann, Tim – Leading Role in UW-Stevens Point Play (May 1979)

Tim Zimmermann, son of Lois Zimmermann, 215 West Street, Loyal, will play the role of Menelaus, King of Sparta, in the Jenkins Theatre production of Euripide’s tragedy, “The Trojan Women,” which opens May 4, 1979 for a week-long run at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point.

Zimmermann, a 1975 graduate of Loyal High School, is a junior theatre arts major and dance minor at UW-SP.

The drama, directed by senior theatre arts student Linda Martin Moore, portrays the hideousness and cruelty of war and its effects on the lives of survivors. The women of Troy are enslaved to their Greek conquerors following the slaughter of the men. Euripides, who was called the poet of the world’s grief, wrote the play in 415 B.C. It tells the story of human weakness and human pain through the varying reactions of each character to the catastrophe.

School: Loyal H.S. Solo & Ensemble Festival Awards (May 1979)

Receiving first for Loyal High School in the state solo and ensemble festival held at Eau Claire were Sabrina Thorson for a vocal and Sue Artz for a piccolo solo.

Receiving seconds for their performances were Lori Lindner and Gary Gluch for a mixed duet. The clarinet choir, the swing choir and the jazz ensemble also took second place.

Third place was taken by Cheryl and Suzanne Schuette for a flute and clarinet duet.

“Overall the kids did a really good job,” said Gerald Mrotek, band director. “I’m very proud of our music department; it’s one of the best around, and it was proven at the contest.”

Rogstad, Andrew E. (19 May 1899 – 8 May 1979)

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, May 11, 1979 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal, for A. Edward Rogstad, 79, of 513 E. Elm Drive, Loyal.

Mr. Rogstad died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 1979 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where he had been admitted on Wednesday, May 2. Death followed a brief illness.

Officiating was Rev. Chester Osowski, and interment was in the parish cemetery. Rinka Funeral Home, Loyal, was in charge of arrangements.

A P.C.C.W. rosary was said at 3 p.m. Thursday, and a prayer service at 8 p.m.

(Andrew) Edward Rogstad was born May 19, 1899 at Rozellville to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. (Bertha Thron) Rogstad. He received his education in Rozellville.

He was married on May 23, 1922 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Rozellville to Hildegarde Burr.

He farmed in the Rozellville are until 1932, then did construction work on locks and dams on the Mississippi River in Iowa and Illinois. In 1937 he returned to farming and construction in Wisconsin.

While in Marshfield with Hutter Co. of Fond du Lac, hew as in charge of constructing a wing of St. Joseph’s Hospital, then was transferred to Bismarck, N.D., where he erected another hospital for Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.

His first wife died on January 10, 1945.

While in Bismarck he was married to Rose Marie Viere on June 5, 1948, and she died on January 6, 1963. He relocated to Loyal in 1951 and also spent several years during the 1960’a in the Spooner area before returning to Loyal.

On January 13, 1964 he married Mrs. Othilia Walter of Loyal, and she survives, along with seven children, Vernon P. Rogstad of Loyal, Harold M. Rogstad of Bismarck, N.D., Mrs. Donald “Mike” (Dorothie) Weyhmiller of Loyal, Mrs. Raymond J. (Delores) LaBarge of Route 1, Loyal, Clarence F. Rogstad of Oshkosh, Mrs. Thomas J. (Anita) Martens of Corvallis, Oregon, and Mrs. Melvin T. (Marian) Ayers of Oshkosh; a stepson, John Schwellenbach of Racine; 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

His sven surviving sisters are Mrs. F. Math (Mabel) Wolf, West Allis, Mrs. Lorell S. (Gertrude) Butt, Stratford, Mrs. Charles S. (Loretta) Schreiner, Colby, Mrs. Edwin A. (Esther) Schreiner, Route 6. Tomahawk, Miss Magdalen R. Rogstad, West Palm Beach, Florida, Mrs. M. J. (Leone) Steger, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Lawrence J. (Helen) Dyrness of Marshfield.

Serving as pallbearers were six of his grandsons: Terrance Rogstad, Gerald LaBarge, Francis Rogstad, Michael Weyhmiller, Tim Martens and Clarence Rogstad, Jr.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Norbert D. Rogstad, on March 23, 1942, and Gerry Allen Rogstad on March 20, 1945; a brother, Reuben J. Rogstad on December 31, 1974; a grandson; his father on October 28, 1922; his mother in 1902; and his step-mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Rogstad on May 31, 1946.

Commencement ceremonies for students graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire will be Saturday, May 19, 1979 in the University Arena.

There will be 956 students receiving degrees. Because of the large graduating class, the 1979 Commencement will feature two ceremonies; one at 9:30 a.m. for graduates of the school of Arts and Sciences, Nursing and Graduate Studies, and the other at 1:30 p.m. for the schools of business and Education.

Presiding over Commencement and conferring the degrees will be UW-EC Chancellor Leonard Haas. Delivering the “Charge of the Class” will be Dr. Edwin Young, president of the UW-System.

School: Granton H.S. FFA Awards (May 1979)

Granton Future Farmers highlighted their year with an awards program Monday evening at the Granton High School. Wayne Kleckner, town of Lynn farmer, received the Progressive Dairyman’s award in recognition of his modern dairy practices. His herd averages over 600 pounds of butterfat per cow.

Winning the Chapter State Farmer award was tom Hasz, who is a senior this year and president of the Granton FFA. Nanette Daleiden, a junior, won the Hewitt Packing trophy given annually to a student who excels in livestock production. She raised champion hogs for both the county fair and Jr. Livestock show in Eau Claire.

The Lynn Dairy presented the Star Greenhand award to Kevin Winger. Tim Foemmel won the Chili Milk Pool trophy for the best herd testing job. Chapter trophies were given to Dale Drinsinger, Greg Olson, and Mike Martin for receiving a superior rating in the state judging contest in livestock judging. The trophy winner in the Hoard’s Dairyman contest went to Terry Vandeberg, a freshman who received a score of 440 points of of 500 possible points.

Loyal High School will be presenting a special award this year at the Awards Day for the high school students on Friday, May 18, 1979.

This award is the David Hoeser memorial award. It will be given to a senior football player who has many of the qualities David had, such as good leadership, good participation, the giving of all-out effort, a nd good sportsmanship on and off the field.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Hoeser, David’s parents, used the money given for memorials for David, to establish this award.

The person to receive this award will be chosen by the coaching staff.

St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal, was the setting of the 1:30 p.m. wedding Mass of Sherre M. Arbelovsky, Stratford, and Joseph P. Rosandich, Jr., Granton.

Officiating was Reverend Lawrence B. Berger of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Chili. Mrs. Sharon Schoonover, Mrs. Diane Anderegg and Miss Judy Zettler provided musical selections, and Miss Jody Schoonover was the organist.

The bride, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Arbelovsky, Jr., was given in marriage by her parents to the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rosandich, Sr.

She was seen in a floor length bridal gown of silk organza trimmed with beaded Chantilly lace with a high neckline, long sleeves and pleated ruffle flounce around the skirt hem, sweeping to a chapel train. She wore a matching lace edged veil in the fingertip length and carried a cascade boquet of pink roses, white carnations and ivy.

Serving as maid of honor was Miss Barb Arbelovsky, Marshfield. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Cliff (Mary) Breseman, Marshfield, Miss Jean Arbelovsky, Spencer, Miss LaVonne Arbelovsky, Spencer, and Miss Patti Joe Arbelovsky, Spencer, all sisters of the bride,. Miniature bride was Miss Erin Winkel, a niece of the groom.

The attendants were attired in organza empire waist dresses of yellow, pink, green lavender and blue, with matching picture hats. They carried white wicker baskets of spring flowers.

Mr. Ronald Rosandich of Granton served as best man. Groomsmen were Clifford Breseman, Marshfield, Louis Rosandich of Granton, Bobby Rosandich of Rockford, Illinois, and Brian Rosandich of Rockford, Illinois. Danny Winkel, Marshfield, was the ring bearers.

A reception, dinner and dance were held at the Loyal American Legion Hall.

The new Mrs. Rosandich is a 1975 graduate of Loyal High School and is employed as a secretary at the Marshfield Clinic.

Mr. Rosandich is a 1974 graduate of Pittsville High School and is employed by J.N. Weigel Company, Inc.

Following a wedding trip to the Ozarks, the couple will be at home at Route 2, Stratford.

Beaver, Jane Marie (May 1979)

Wedding day guests were seated in St. John’s Catholic Church, Marshfield, by Alfred Hills, Loyal and Wayne O’Brien, Marshfield, to witness the marriage of Jane Marie Beaver, Spencer, and Glenn Robert Frankwick, Marshfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Frankwick, Marshfield.

The Reverend John Martinson officiated at the 1:30 p.m. nuptials, during which the bride was given in marriage by her father. Providing musical selections were Jeff Harder, Chris Wenzel and Nancy Kipp, organist.

The bride was seen in a gown designed with high neck, Bishop sleeves, wide bridal cuffs and an all-lace bodice of re-embroidered Chantilly lace touched with pears. Her full chiffon skirt carried a chapel train. Her Juliet cap held a walking length veil to match her gown, and she carried a bouquet of white roses, lavender mums, yellow carnations baby’s breath and ivy.

Preceiding the bride into the church were her attendants: Mrs. Sally Seefeld, Marshfield, matron of honor; Lea Becker, Wisconsin Rapids, Mrs. Marge Franz, Marshfield, Sharon, (?), Rochester, Minnesota, and Mrs. Rita Hanneman of Marshfield.

They were attired in dresses with lavender underskirts and taffeta dotted Swiss Overly, accent by deep lavender embroidered flowers. The carried lavender mums, white daisies and yellow carnations and wore flower clusters in their hair.

Serving the groom as best man was Charles Frankwick, Marshfield. Groomsmen were Mark Strohman, Marshfield, Bob Scidmore, Marshfield, Ron Nagel, Marshfield, and Dennis Hanneman, Marshfield.

A reception, dinner and dance were held at the Village Plaza, Spencer.

The bride, a 1973 graduate of Marshfield Columbus High School and a 1976 graduate of Wester Wisconsin Institute, is employed at Marshfield Book and Stationery.

The groom, a 1974 graduate of Marshfield Senior High School, is also employed at Marshfield Book and Stationery.

The couple will be at home in Marshfield after returning from a wedding trip to Florida.
