Borchert, Donald Carl (June 17, 1927- August 3, 2010)

 

Donald Carl Borchert, 83, Sun Prairie, formally of Colby, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at his home.

 

He was born June 17, 1927, the son of Carl and Olga Borchert. 

 

Carl grew up on a farm near Colby. After graduating form high school, he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific.

 

He married Betty Hall in 1951, she passed away in 1984. 

 

In 1991, he married Mary McAteer.

 

He had a short stint with the St. Louis Cardinals and a 60 year career in broadcast engineering. In 2006, he was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

 

Carl is survived by his wife; sons, Steven and Scott; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 


A celebration of Don’s life was held Monday, August, 9, 2010 at the Esquire Club in Madison.

Donald Carl Borchert, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at his home in Sun Prairie.

 

He was born on June 17, 1927, the son of Carl and Olga Borchert. Don grew up on a farm near Colby. He graduated from high school and joined the Navy, serving aboard the USS Cascade and the USS Holland in the Pacific region. Returning from the Navy he had a short career with the Saint Louis Cardinals and a 60-year career in broadcast engineering. Don received his PE in 1966 and joined WHA Radio and Television in 1968.

 

After retirement he continued to chair the Broadcasters Clinic and served as a technical advisor with the Madison Community Candelabra tower project for the UW Research Park Foundation. In 2003 the Society of Broadcast Engineers named him Educator of the Year and in 2006 he was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of the Capital City Musky Club.

 

In 1951 Don married Betty Hall of Pikeville, Ky. They had two sons, Steven and Scott. Betty passed away in 1984.

 

In 1991 he married Mary McAteer in Hawaii.

 

Don his survived by his very caring wife, Mary Borchert; his two sons; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

 

A celebration of Don's life will be held at the ESQUIRE CLUB, 1025 N. Sherman Ave., Madison on Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to HospiceCare Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.

 

Don's family would like to thank Dr. Schelman and his staff at UW Hospital for his care. He will miss all of his friends and of course his Beagles.
