Funeral services for James McGonigal, 93, were held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 9 a.m. last Friday, with the Rev. Fr. Aloys Zinthefer officiating. Interment was made in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Degenhardt, Ed Kreuser, L. A. Davel, Ed Bertz, William Theisen Sr. and George Roth.
The former Loyal businessman died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield on Tuesday, Jan. 31, of old age complications.
Mr. McGonigal was born on Mar. 29, 1856, on a farm near Newboro, Ontario, Canada. He married Anna Irwin in 1885, and they lived in the state of New York before moving to Wisconsin and settling at Minocqua. There Mr. McGonigal was a partner of Michael Doyle in a lumber business.
In 1905 they came to Loyal and operated the Doyle and McGonigal hardware store until Mr. Doyle died. After his partner’s death, Mr. McGonigal took over the store and ran the business with his son Frank until November 1944, when the store was sold to E. W. Sterr and Jerome Will.
Mrs. McGonigal preceded her husband in death, passing away on Aug. 4, 1919. His son is his only survivor. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
